Mmmm . . . Anastasia Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette {Review & Swatches}

I don’t have much experience with ABH eyeshadow palettes. I own the ABH Self-Made palette, but I didn’t do a review because it was limited edition as were all the other palettes before this. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette is permanent, Can I hear a hooray!

Anastasia Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette includes 14 eyeshadows that come in a mix of warmer neutrals and pops of pink/red. The colour selection is gorgeous and very on trend, but this palette is not for the faint of heart.

As a note, it is packaged with a velvety exterior not the standard cardboard. This gets grubby very quickly, but it is what it is. It has a good side mirror and a good quality, dual-sided brush.

The shadows are pigmented and long-lasting. I used the Smashbox 24-hour eyeshadow primer, which is clear.

Swatches

Tempera is a light beige with warm, peachy tones and a satiny sheen. It was incredibly pigmented, soft and silky that applied well. Great shade to set your primer.

Golden Ochre is a muted, medium-dark yellow with strong, olive tones, kind of mustard with matte finish. The texture is soft and blendable, but kicks up a lot of dust.

Vermeer is a bright, light peachy with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It’s finely milled, which resulted in some excess product getting kicked up in the pan. It applied well, and has a great colour-payoff.

Buon Fresco is a medium purple-mauve with a matte finish. It does have a lot of kick back but redeems itself with good pigmentation.

Antique Bronze is a soft, dark brown with reddish undertones It had nice pigmentation  and a pretty sheen. Application was smooth but it had a lightly dusty consistency.

Love Letter is a muted, dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good pigmentation but needs to be built up to get the colour in the pan. It’s slightly dry, which I appreciate, because there is little fallout, and I wouldn’t want that shade all over my face.

Cyprus Umber is deep, warm brown with matte finish. It is very opaque, blended well and has little kick back.

Red Ochre is a muted, medium-dark reddish-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a very silky-smooth texture that blended out but had to be built up to get the shade true to pan.

Venetian Red is a medium-dark red with subtle, warmer undertones and a mostly matte finish. This one was the driest shade in the palette, it kicked up excess product. It has to be built up but blended out easily.

Warm Taupe is a medium, taupe-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth, blendable, and easy to use.

Realgar is a medium orange-brown with a satin finish. It had good pigmentation with a very smooth, silky. This was the best performing shade in the palette

Raw Sienna is a light-medium brown with warm, golden undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had a soft, smooth, blends easily, but again, I felt that there was a lot of kickback.

Burnt Orange is a slightly muted, medium orange-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth, very lightly dusty

Primavera is a light-medium peachy-gold with warm undertones and a frosted, lightly metallic finish. It was opaque and very soft, best used with your fingers because it has a dusty consistency.

Final Thoughts

This is a beautiful palette with a great mix of shades. However, while the pops of pink and red look gorgeous, you have to ask yourself if you will take a chance and wear them. Honestly, I bought the palette for  Venetian Red and Love Letter, and I wear them. If you can’t see yourself reaching for those shades, because let’s face it, not everyone feels comfortable, no matter how on trend the shades are. I like that you can get a full look with one palette. It really is preference . . .
