Pause! Smashbox Pore Minimizing Photo Finish Primer

The only orange peel I like is the candied variety, the ones I use when baking lemon and orange muffins or my Christmas cake.

While I love how it tastes, I hate the way orange peels look and that’s what my pores look like to me.

When foundation settles into pores, the orange peel turns into potholes and while I will get no joy calling the Roads department, I thought I’d try the Smashbox Pore Minimizing Photo Finish Primer.

Ok ,I exaggerate for effect, I don’t have very large pores but they are visible, especially when I apply foundation.

I was really excited about trying this primer after the MAC Prep and Prime Line filler was a massive FAIL.

This guy promises dramatic pore reduction for 8 hours. Over hyped, there was no drama.

So here’s the deal, I have always said that Smashbox primers are the best ever. They were the first primers I used when they came in glass bottles and under base was the secret of make up artists.

The Smashbox Pore Minimizing Photo Finish Primer comes in a plastic tube. I had to squeeze the tube pretty hard to get some product out.

Look at that dent!
Look at that dent!

I have never experienced that with a Smashbox primer. I immediately thought, I was going to slather a thick layer of margarine on my face and expected the worse. (For reference, I hate margarine . . I only eat butter) Then I saw the colour of the primer, it was nude beige and again, I thought, I’m a brownie, what have I done.

I think the tube drama was a bit of a first time technical failure but the texture of the primer was thicker than the other Smashbox primers. I figured that it would be denser because it was a pore minimizing primer after all.

So, I bit the bullet and used a pea-sized amount and it was like Harry Potter flicked his magic wand as the colour went from nude to clear and the texture sheered out to silkiness and dried matte. Though it dried matte, my face didn’t feel taught. It felt comfortable and soft.

Did this work, yes !

I found that my foundation went on smooth, lasted a bit longer. It felt like the pores went on holiday but not for 8 eight hours. After about four hours, I did get oily on my T-Zone and my pores returned from their vay-cay . . . however, I found that my foundation did look slightly more decent . . . but they were there.

While writing this, I realised that the pros of this product felt like a review of all the Smashbox primers. It created the perfect canvas for a flawless face.

I am not in love with this product, I like it but not the ‘I need this in my life’ kind of like.

The original Smashbox Photo Finish Primer is on par, actually it is far better.

Will I repurchase this? No

Why? Because Smashbox has a primer that’s a cult classic . . . The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer is iconic and there’s a reason why. Hey, that’s what happens when you set the bar that high!
