Colour Kohl-ded! Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils {Review and Swatches}

When it comes to makeup, there are certain things I don’t mind spending money on. I don’t mind shelling out for face products: foundation, powder, concealer and primers. I gladly wear drugstore anything else. When it comes to mascara, I have one key requirement, it must be easy to remove. With eyeliner, be it pens, pencils, gels, it must be easy to apply and take off. If it tugs at my eyes or irritates them, I don’t care if it’s Princess Jasmine’s Holy Grail, I will bin it!  It is like my dating history, if my date irritated me during dinner at the fanciest restaurant, I would kick him to the curb . . . I have done it and not so politely. (True story) If you have watched any of my YouTube tutorials, you know I have a love affair with the Maybelline Colossal Kajal. It’s not because it’s cheap, it’s my Holy Grail, and my favourite black Kohl pencil.

At the Urban Decay store opening in Sandton City last month, there was a special offer for the first 100 people. It was a free gift with purchase. If you spent more than R1500, you had a choice between a Naked Smoky Palette or a set of the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Pencils.  I snagged the last of this set of 10 24/7 Glide on eye pencils, with a full-sized Perversion liner and Grindhouse Double Barrel Sharpener.

The famous Perversion eyeliner was not on my wish list. And it was sold out. It was Bourbon that I was after, but that was sold out too, so I got Whiskey instead.

I’m into brown liners at the moment . . . I love smoking out my lower lash line with it or just lining the inner rim of my waterline. I love the romantic, soft, feminine effect it has.

The eye pencil is not a wooden pencil. It is plastic with the product inside. It’s not retractable or self sharpening, like the Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl you have to go old school and sharpen it, manually! that sounds soooooo strange . . .

Urban Decay claims that these waterproof and long-lasting, creamy and  ‘The best Eye Pencil ever, ever, ever!’ Mmmmm . . . it’s too lofty a claim for me to agree with but it’s better some high-end brands I have tried? The Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Perversion lived up to its hype.

It glides onto the eye, and it smudges out and blends effortlessly. It is smooth and creamy and super black . . . but there are so many other soft and creamy black pencils on the market that perform just as well. MAC Smoulder is at the same price point but is not as long lasting or waterproof. Still, Perversion didn’t blow my hair into cornrows.

HOWEVER, what gave me the feels, were the other shades. I have found coloured eye pencils to be the worst . . . both high-end and drugstore. If I buy them, they are more often than not hard, lack pigment and are just dang rubbish! I often run the tip over the flame of a lighter to soften it . . . that’s a great hack!

Now, onto  Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye pencils:

There are 41 permanent shades of the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye pencils with Shimmer, Satin, Matte, Metallic, Duotone and Glitter finishes

My little set of nine travel-sized eye pencils are not permanent shades. They were exclusive to the set, however, you can find similar shades in the permanent line. Despite the shades being limited edition, it was a great way for me to try out the colourful eye pencils. For purposes of this post I’ve divided them into two sets to show you the swatches in two lots as opposed to 11 swaths on my hand.

SWATCHES

This first set also includes swatches of Perversion and Whiskey.

 

Faint: Matte Taupe. It isn’t as pigmented as the rest so you have to pack it on to get full colour payoff

Glitter Rock:  Brown-based violet with pink glitter. When it blends out, there is slight fallout but more of the iridescent sparkle is apparent.

Moonspoon: Gunmetal with silver shimmer. Blends seamlessly with  no fallout. Excellent formula.

Smokeout: Blackened Brown. A firm favourite, like a mixture of Whiskey and Perversion.

Whiskey: Matte and pigmented, I want to contour with it and write love letter on my face with it! It’s that good.

Perversion: Matte and super black.

BLENDED

Blends beautifully . .  seamless . . .

Onto more colourful and bold shades . . .

Stargazer: Bright yellow gold with a metallic finish, which when blended out, has fine shimmer but no chunky glitter fallout. Best gold eyeliner pencil I have in my collection

Gonzo: Bold turquoise that has a matte/sheen finish.

Mugshot: True pewter that blends effortlessly. No shimmer, glitter, just sheen. Gorgeous

Vacancy: High shine, sea green that is metallic and blends out smoothly. Of the entire collection, it is my favourite in terms of opacity and formula.

Voodoo: Electric violet with pink sparkle.Duotone finish. Blends out  a bit patchy.

BLENDED

I love that this selection has a mix of metallic, bold and earthy shades.

The bottom line is that these are high-pigment, high-impact and super creamy eye pencils.

Perhaps it’s because it’s created with 50% moisturizing ingredients suspended in a sophisticated waterproof formula. Maybe it’s the Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E and or Cottonseed Oil?

Sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad and these 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils can be toooooo creamy and break off at the nib or really get out of shape with the slightest pressure. Pop them in the fridge for a minute or two before using it and you will be fine.

Another cool thing I noted. I did sharpen a few of the pencils and I was absolutely horrified by the amount of shavings left behind and felt cheated because this ishhh is sssspensive . . .  I thought a whole lot of product was being wasted and I wasn’t happy. But I looked closely and I realized that there was no noticeable product in the shavings. It was the plastic. Imagine that . . .

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you wear eye pencils around the price point of MAC, then definitely give this a go instead on your next purchase. If you are only into black eye pencils, while this is good, I can say with confidence that you can skip it because matte black eye pencils are not hard to find. If you love playing with colour, if you love metallic, bold, bright eye pencils, definitely start a collection of these. They are, so far, the best coloured eye pencils I have tried.
